Louisiana's colleges and universities understand the need to ensure the safety and security on campus. We have undertaken deliberate and comprehensive measures to accomplish that goal. However, we do not believe that forcing colleges to allow concealed weapons would make campuses safer. To the contrary, research indicates that the widespread presence of concealed weapons would make our campuses more dangerous... read more »

Mandeville Mayor Eddie Price now says he doesn't recall drinking the night he hit a toll booth barrier while driving south on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in his city vehicle.

But when he was stopped by Causeway officers April 22 at a crossover more than three miles from the toll booth, he gave a different account. Mayor Price admitted having had "a couple of drinks" and told officers that he didn't remember hitting the gate, according to a police report.

His behavior on the bridge -- driving on after hitting the gate and turning off his headlights -- is troubling. So are the inconsistencies in his account of what happened. But the actions of Causeway police officers also are disturbing. read more »

In evening their best-of-seven series 2-2 with a 100-80 rout of New Orleans, the Spurs did everything we've become accustomed to seeing over the past few years. Each of their big three produced big numbers, with Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan combining for 54 points in the first three quarters to put the champs up 85-61 before the Hornets waved the white flag.

David West and Peja Stojakovic, who destroyed the Spurs in the first two games, combined to shoot 7-for-24, and few of them were easy looks (though the two layups Stojakovic blew in the first six minutes probably were a bad omen). read more »

In 1918, Aleister Crowley, the British occultist and writer, composed a lyrical essay on absinthe and aesthetics titled "The Green Goddess." He wrote his essay not in London or Paris, but in New Orleans – the absinthe capital of the United States.

"Art is the soul of life," he decreed, "and the Old Absinthe House is the heart and soul of the old quarter of New Orleans." The establishment he was referring to is still located at 240 Bourbon Street, on the corner of Bourbon and Bienville. read more »

Two and a half years after Hurricane Katrina left 80 percent of New Orleans submerged, the city has rebounded remarkably, at least by some measures.

At present, 44% of the Lakeview neighborhood's population has returned, which is a significant accomplishment because many residents were not returning just to recoup the value of their homes, but to rebuild from scratch. read more »
