Hurricane Katrina's Toll on Trees in Southeast Louisiana

Trees Not Growing After Katrina?  Consider Hiring a Professional Arborist

COVINGTON, LOUISIANA - One of the lesser-known stories from Hurricane Katrina is the toll that the Category 5 storm and its legion of tornadoes took on trees in Southeast Louisiana. Entire forests were decimated, with seemingly immortal, giant live oak trees uprooted as though they were made of feathers.

In many places across parts of South Louisiana including and especially in Saint Tammany Parish, the process of reforestation has been a challenge to say the least, with some property owners reporting having no success whatsoever of replanting the wooded areas that were annihilated by the fierce winds of Katrina and squadrons of vicious tornadoes that left the entire Southeastern part of the state appear as though in had been a war zone --- a war in which everybody lost.

Hurricane Katrina Tree Damage

For several months after the storm, Louisiana tree removal companies were the most in-demand service in the entire state, with many people having to wait months before they could have their fallen trees removes simply because there were so many of them (trees) down, and a limited number of Arborists, Landscapers and professional tree-removal services.

Since Katrina killed off all our trees, we haven't been able to get trees to grow back with any degree of success.  We had well over 1,000 down on the property, completely blocking off access in-and-out, and to top it all off we had a woman 8 1/2 months pregnant weathering out the storm with us.

It doesn't seem to matter what type of tree it is either.  We've replanted hundreds of evergreen pines, live oaks, and even a few orange, lemon and fig trees.  The best ones have merely not grown in the three years since we planted them.  The others dies off.

We are at the point now where we'd like to restore the serene environment we enjoyed before the storm (as opposed to the 'recently carpet-bombed' look is sported for the better part of a year following the storm.  We're going to need professional help to do it though.  That's why at some point in the near-future I'm going to contact a reputable Arborist to fix the problem once and for all and restore the wooded beauty that existed pre-Katrina.

What is an Arborist and Why Hire One?

(From: http://www.arbontreeservices.com)

"An Arborist can efficiently perform tasks necessary to maintain or improve the health, safety and appearance of your trees. Trees that are not pruned regularly will develop weaker, unsightly limbs and branches. Also, Working with large trees can be very dangerous especially if you don’t have all the proper equipment and experience required for the job."

If anyone reading this hails from the Southern portions of the state of Lousiana and has been experiencing similar problems getting their trees to grow, consider hiring a professional arborist and/or landscaper to help with your reforestation and/or replanting efforts.
