With all the talk about Peyton Manning being perhaps the best quarterback in the history of the National Football League, his counterpart for the New Orleans Saints has had a far better season, at least statistically.
Drew Brees had a better completion percentage than Manning (he set the NFL all-time record in fact), a better QB rating (10 points better to be specific), and a much better touchdown-to-interception ratio (34-11 to 33-16, respectively).
You do the math, when the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints take the field Sunday for the Super Bowl in Miami, the better quarterback may just be the one wearing Black and Gold.
Peyton Manning:
- Yards: 4500
- Completion %: 68.8
- Yards Per Attempt: 7.88
- Touchdowns: 33
- Interceptions: 16
- QB Rating: 99.9
Drew Brees:
- Yards: 4388
- Completion %: 70.6
- Yards Per Attempt: 8.54
- Touchdowns: 34
- Interceptions: 11
- QB Rating: 109.6
In addition to the above numbers for the regular season, in Brees has been slightly better in the playoffs as well, passing for six touchdowns without an interception compared to Manning's five touchdowns and one interception.
As far as the statistical comparison between Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, with one game left to play in the 2009-2010 season, Drew Brees has been the far better quarterback, at least up to this point.
